The coal mining town of Moss Creek in 1931 wasn't much, one company store and one gas station. Families living there had very little. For Johnny Marko, age ten, and his mother and father, life couldn't be any rougher. But Johnny does have one solace, a love for his mother, and a deep admiration for his father whom he follows around like a shadow. Then one unexpected summer an accident tears his family apart. His father dies in a suspicious accident. Johnny has a suspicion, but at his young age is unsure of himself. Johnny and his mother eke out a living, and a few years later move to a larger city. But the memories haunt him, and many years - and a world war - later Johnny returns to his hometown under an assumed name. He concocts a plan he knows borders on lunacy. But he commits himself and in the months that follow all that used to be only bits and parts of a dark memory now plays itself out to its horrible conclusion.

This is both educational and entertaining as a good versus evil thriller, taking us back to the coal mining industry in the 1930's when miners were trying to get the union into their company. Mr. Hula kept the story line very focused and rich with description as he introduced new situations and characters throughout this book. A good read for anyone who has worked in mines, who has had family members work as miners, and for anyone who wants to read about a back busting industry that is still in existence today!

Haven't finished the book but was assured I would love it
Marvelous read. SWEET and SENTIMENTEL yet with an underlying air of suspense to keep you intrigued to the last page. LOTS of surprises.
Very good book. Really enjoyed it
Growing up in a harsh environment with love and encouragement at home and a bitter truth at every turn in the mining community in the early labor/management era. Shows a lot of heart and soul.
An excellent story line that moves along and holds your interest. A lot of detail that adds to the story from personal contact by the author that adds so much realism to the story, and makes it historically correct as to how the mines were operated during that period of time. I found it to be an excellent read and hard to put down.
For those of you who like to read a captivating mystery that also allows you to "sense, feel, see, smell, hear - close your eyes and you are there" style of book, this is the one! I laughed, smiled, wished, hoped, sighed and cried along with the characters of it. The twists and turns of this book were brilliant and kept me guessing, right to the end. One of the absolute best reads I've had in a long time! Thank you Mr. Hula!!
